An individual suffering from this condition may be sweat up to four times more than others in order to keep a normal body temperature. The condition can hamper the daily activities, cause itching or discomfort, and create embarrassment in social settings. Botox, which ranks among the leading facial anti-aging alternatives for cosmetic surgery, can be used successfully as a treatment for excessive sweating in the armpits. The FDA has approved Botox for the reduction of underarm sweating, and the benefits can last up to two years. The same Botox injections that are used for aesthetics purposes are used to treat this medical condition. Approval from the FDA The FDA approved Botox in 2004 for the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis when it cannot be controlled with topical creams or anti-perspirants. Botox is injected into the skin to treat severe underarm sweating symptoms. Individuals in the age group of 18 or higher are eligible to receive this treatment if they have not found relief with topical medications. Patients should note that the FDA has approved Botox for excessive sweating only in the underarm area. The FDA has stated that it is not yet determined whether Botox can be used safely and effective for excessive sweating in areas other than the armpits. The treatment approach for Botox as an aesthetics procedure in place of cosmetic surgery is similar, but the provider must correctly determine the patient’s sweating condition before using Botox as a solution for excessive sweating. How does Botox Work? The primary ingredient of Botox is botulinum toxin A, which acts as a nerve immobilizer to treat the problem of excessive underarm sweating. The neurotoxin will block the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. In absence of the nerve signals, the overactive sweat glands will stop their function, and the severe sweating will be reduced. Patients can be reassured that excess sweat in such treatment is not collected in the body. The sweat simply does not get produced in the areas treated with Botox. However, the other parts of the body will continue to sweat as before.
